AfterElite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Malibu Owner’s Guide
Elite keypad and intercom repair in Malibu typically runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the intercom module, or both. We stock Elite-compatible keypads and intercom parts on the truck, so most Malibu calls are handled same-day when parts match your existing housing. You’ll usually know the part has failed before you get out of the car: the keypad goes dead, the speaker crackles, or the button press does nothing and you’re stuck in the driveway with the gate staring back at you.
Hal Gatewood has fixed Elite keypads from Point Dume to Malibu Lagoon since 2001. These units live outside in salt air and sun, and the failure points are predictable once you’ve seen a few hundred of them. Most keypads and intercoms don’t fail all at once. They quit one function at a time – the speaker first, then the keypad backlight, then the whole board.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite has made several keypad and intercom lines over the years, and the part numbers matter. The older EL-25 series keypads and the newer SL-3000 style faceplates look similar from ten feet away but don’t interchange – the mounting hole spacing is off by nearly half an inch, and the wiring harness connectors are different. Half the “bad keypad” calls we get in Malibu turn out to be a new keypad someone installed in an old housing with the wrong backplate.
Here’s what to check before you spend money: pull the keypad face off and look for a label on the back of the housing or the circuit board. Elite prints the series number there – EL-25, EL-2000, SL-2000, SL-3000, and a few discontinued residential lines like the KP-200. Take a picture of that label and text it over. If the label is sun-faded or the board looks chalky from salt exposure, the part is beyond board-level repair and you need a replacement.

For most Malibu gate systems, a quality aftermarket keypad matched to the correct series does the job at roughly half the OEM price. The exception is intercom modules inside secured buildings or HOA-gated communities in Malibu, where the HOA or property manager usually wants the exact Elite OEM part number for records. Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. This is almost always the relay on the control board, not the keypad itself. The keypad is sending a signal; the relay that triggers the opener is done. Common on Elite units that have been in service in Malibu since the mid-2010s, because the contacts corrode from ambient salt moisture.
- Speaker crackles or the call button produces no sound. The intercom speaker cone degrades from heat and salt air. On the EL-25 and SL-3000 series we see the speaker surround tear first – it will buzz on loud days but barely whisper on calm ones.
- Water inside the housing after rain. The gasket behind the keypad dry-rots in the Malibu sun and lets water wick down into the board. You’ll see condensation on the screen, erratic key presses, or dead zones on the numpad.
- Scrolling code problems: the gate resets to no code. The keypad’s memory chip takes voltage spikes from nearby garage motors or the opener’s own draw-down and loses its stored codes. You’ll re-program it, and it’ll hold for two weeks, then wipe again.
- Physical wear: buttons need a hard press to register. The mylar switch layer under the keypad face wears out from sun and finger oil. On Malibu driveways near the beach, we see this at about the five-year mark regardless of brand. A hard press is the keypad asking to retire.

A full intercom module swap runs $260 to $420 depending on the series and whether the wiring in the housing is salvageable or corroded from beach air. But here’s the thing – Elite keypads tie into the same housing as the gate’s safety loops and edge sensors, and on some Malibu properties they’re tied into a security camera or alarm line as well. If you cross a wire or land a 24V leg on the wrong terminal, you’re not just out a keypad – you can smoke the gate control board, and that’s a $400 to $900 mistake that no YouTube video will fix for free.

Three to seven years is realistic for a keypad in Malibu, depending on sun exposure and salt proximity. A unit on the east side of the house under an overhang will outlast one facing the ocean with no shade by a couple years.
Sometimes – if it’s a loose wire, a shorted relay that can be re-soldered, or a wet board that can be cleaned and dried, we’ll do that first. But if the mylar layer is shot or the speaker surround is torn, replacement is cheaper than board-level repair every time. We’ll tell you straight which one it is.
