If your Mighty Mule gate is sagging, grinding, or binding at the hinge point, we stock and install replacement hinges and rollers same-day across Malibu. Typical installed cost runs $185 to $420 depending on which Mighty Mule series you have and how much the salt air has eaten into the post. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the gate starts dragging on the opener, the motor strains a little harder each week, and then one afternoon it stops mid-swing and the keypad just beeps at them.
Here’s what nobody tells you on the big-box parts sites: the hinge is almost never the first thing to fail. It’s the roller or the bearing inside the hinge barrel that goes first, and by the time you hear it, the hinge itself is usually wallowed out from running dry for a season or two.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
Mighty Mule has used a few different hinge and roller configurations across their product line over the years, and the part that fits an FM200 is not the same part that fits a newer MM371W or an older M350. The most common installs we see out here are the MM360, MM371, and the Mighty Mule Heavy Duty (MM562/MM572) series. Each of those takes a different barrel diameter and pin spec, and the post bracket spacing is not universal.
Here’s the gotcha: the stamp on the hinge itself rarely tells you anything useful. To match the part correctly, we measure the barrel length, pin diameter, and the bolt pattern on the post bracket, then pull the original Mighty Mule part number from the opener’s control board housing or the manual if you still have it. For the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, we’re honest about it: for hinges specifically, we recommend OEM Mighty Mule parts when we can get them, because the aftermarket versions we’ve pulled off Malibu gates are usually thinner walled and don’t hold up to the coastal air. For rollers, a good sealed-bearing aftermarket roller is often better than the original.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Visible sag at the latch end. When the gate starts sitting low at the free end, the hinge barrel has usually worn past the point of adjusting. A sagging gate is never a motor problem – it’s a hinge or post problem, and we start there.
- Metal-on-metal grinding when the gate moves. That’s the roller riding on a flat spot or a dry bearing inside the hinge barrel. Nothing about that sound fixes itself.
- The opener is hot to the touch after a normal cycle. A Mighty Mule motor pushing a gate with bad rollers runs hotter and burns out faster. You’re trading a $60 roller for a $400 board.
- The gate bounces or shudders at the halfway point. That’s usually the roller on the bottom track catching, especially on the steeper driveway grades you see up in Big Rock and out past Las Flores Canyon.
- The gate closes halfway and reverses. The safety sensor thinks it hit something. It didn’t – the hinge is binding and the motor is reading the drag as an obstruction.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest Malibu pricing. This is what we tell people on the phone before we ever send a truck.
- Single hinge replacement (OEM Mighty Mule): $185-$275 installed, depending on the series.
- Full hinge set (both hinges + pins): $310-$420 installed, most common on MM360 and MM371 series.
- Roller replacement (single): $40-$85 installed. We replace the roller, not the whole bracket, unless the bracket is rotted.
- Hinge + roller combo with post shimming: $260-$480, varies with how much the post has moved.
What drives the range is the condition of the post and whether we’re doing the work on a flat driveway or a sloped one where the gate has to be blocked and re-plumbed. Every quote is a flat number given before we touch a wrench. No surprises at the door.

A hinge and roller swap on a Mighty Mule is not in the same danger class as a torsion spring, but it’s not a no-risk job either. The gate itself is heavy – a 14-foot steel gate out near Point Dume can weigh 300 to 500 pounds – and when the hinges come off, the gate has to be held in position. If the gate shifts while you’re pulling the old hinge, you’re looking at crushed fingers or a bent panel.
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible slop at the hinge pin, spin the roller by hand and see if it’s grinding, and verify the post bolts are tight.
