Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication: The Malibu Owner’s Guide

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds their gate openers around the AX series (AX-1, AX-2, AX-3 dual-gate kits) and the DTP series for heavier fabricated steel gates. The welded parts we see fail on these systems fall into three groups: the post-mount hinge brackets, the gate-to-opener arm attachment plate, and the gate frame itself where the original welder didn’t burn hot enough or used the wrong filler rod for the salt air. On a Ghost Controls gate, the opener arm plate is usually zinc-plated mild steel, which lasts about six to eight years within a mile of the ocean before the plating gives up and the rust starts working the bolt holes egg-shaped.

Here’s the identification gotcha: Ghost Controls changed the arm mounting hole pattern between the AX-1 and the later AX-2. They’re not interchangeable. If you order a plate by eyeball instead of matching the model number on the control box, you’ll drill holes in the wrong places and the opener will bind. We check the motor label or the inside of the control box before we cut anything. As for OEM versus aftermarket, we’ll tell you straight: the OEM Ghost Controls brackets are fine for inland Malibu, but a number of homes up Kanan and Latigo get a better result with a heavier aftermarket plate we cut ourselves from 1/4-inch plate and powder coat. The OEM plate is 11-gauge. On a heavy steel gate in canyon wind, 11-gauge flexes and the flex is what kills the weld.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• Gate sags and drags on the opener side. The hinge post is usually fine; it’s the welded bracket that’s torn off the post or the gate frame that’s cracked at the weld toe. In Malibu’s salt air, a through-weld that wasn’t sealed becomes the failure point every time.
• Opener arm rattles or bangs when the gate starts moving. The attachment plate has come loose from the gate stile. You’re hearing the plate slap against the frame before it separates completely.
• Fresh rust streaking under any weld joint. That’s not surface rust; that’s moisture wicking into a cracked seam. By the time it streaks orange down the post, the inside of the weld is already failing.
• Gate jerks or stutters mid-travel. The opener senses resistance and backs off. That resistance is usually a bent bracket or a hinge that’s bound because the weld shifted and put the whole gate out of plane.
• You can see daylight through a crack at the hinge or the arm mount. This is the one that should get you to call today. When you can see light through it, the part is working as a hinge in the wrong place, flexing every cycle until it snaps.

DIY or Call Us?

The honest split is this: you can safely check whether the gate is still true by sighting down the top rail, and you can tighten loose bolts on the opener arm. What you shouldn’t do, even with a MIG in the garage, is weld on a loaded gate frame or on the tensioned arm of a Ghost Controls opener. The gate weighs four hundred to a thousand pounds, and a weld that gives way under load hurts people, the panels at the foot of it, and the opener that’s now fighting a moving part it wasn’t designed to absorb. Most of the gates we get called out to in Malibu were “fixed” by somebody with a welder who wasn’t the original installer, and the salvage work costs more than the original repair would have. If you want to check it yourself first, look at the welds with a flashlight: a good weld is a smooth ripple, a failing one has a hairline crack with a rust line through it.
