Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls runs three main lines that show up on Malibu driveways: the AXP series (solar-ready, the one you see most on rural properties), the R series (heavier swing gates, often paired with a secondary leaf), and the TSS series (commercial-duty slides). Access control compatibility isn’t universal across all three, and that’s where owners get burned. The keypad or receiver that plugs into an AXP2 won’t necessarily talk to an R-series board without the right adapter, and the mounting bore for the keypad post is different between the AXP and the TSS. When you call us, the first thing we’ll ask is what model number is on the motor housing, not what the box the keypad came in says. Ghost Controls changed their receiver frequencies and pairing protocols around 2019, so a keypad bought for a pre-2019 board often won’t pair without a firmware update or a new receiver. On the parts side, we stock genuine Ghost Controls keypads, receivers, and harnesses alongside quality aftermarket equivalents where they’re actually worth using. For keypads and receivers, we generally recommend genuine Ghost Controls parts, because the aftermarket versions we’ve pulled off Malibu gates have a bad habit of dropping their pairing after a power cycle. Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad backlight comes on, gate doesn’t budge. The keypad is sending a signal, but the receiver or the board isn’t acting on it. Nine times out of ten, it’s a failed receiver or a loose data wire at the board, not a dead motor.
• One code stops working while another still opens the gate. That’s usually a worn keypad membrane, not a programming issue. Individual buttons fail before the whole pad goes, and you’ll chase that ghost for a week before you realize the “7” button just isn’t registering any more.
• Gate opens for the code but won’t close without hitting the button three times. The safety edge or photo-eye circuit is sending a false obstruction. The access control is fine, but it’s reading a fault from a corroded sensor wire, which is a constant problem within a mile of the salt air.
• Keypad works fine in dry weather, dies after a storm. Water is getting into the housing through a cracked gasket or a worn bellows. In Malibu, the marine layer does this slowly over two or three years until the circuit board inside looks like it went for a swim.
• Gate opens on its own at random intervals. Interference from a neighbor’s new solar system or a stray signal from another gate in the canyon. Ghost Controls receivers use a rolling code, but the older units can occasionally pick up noise and fire the board. Re-pairing usually fixes it.

DIY or Call Us?

For access control specifically, most of the work on Ghost Controls systems is low-voltage, twelve-volt wiring, so it’s not the high-tension danger you’d get with springs or cables. That said, there are a few spots where owners walking through a DIY install can get themselves into real trouble. The main one is opening the main board to re-pair a receiver: the high-voltage terminals are right there, and if the gate motor is on a battery backup or a solar array, the system stays hot even when the breaker is off. A second one is running wire through an underground conduit without checking for irrigation lines, which we see all the time in the yard-heavy properties over in the canyons.
