Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Malibu Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible keypad and intercom repair parts across Malibu, with typical keypad replacements running $265-$420 installed and intercom station work landing between $340-$590 depending on the model and wiring condition. Most jobs are done same day because the parts fit on the truck. Homeowners usually find us after the keypad goes dead mid-afternoon, or the intercom starts buzzing like a hornet every time the gate opens. You type your code, nothing happens. You press the call button, nobody hears you. The gate still works from the clicker, but the entry pad is gone.

The fix is usually straightforward: we match your existing Linear model, swap the failed unit, verify the wiring, and you’re back to punching in your code before the marine layer rolls in. Hal Gatewood has been sorting out Linear keypads along the Malibu coast since 2001, and most failures he sees are weather-related, not abuse-related. Salt air gets into everything out here. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear, but we stock their parts and know their quirks.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear made a long run of keypads and intercoms under the access control line, and the model numbers tell you most of what you need: the AE-100, AE-500, AE-1000, and AE-2000 series keypads, plus the AM-KP and the older IEI 212i rebrands that Linear put their name on. Intercom side, you’re usually looking at the AE-800, AE-3500, or the LTM series paired with a telephone entry panel. The compatibility gotcha: Linear changed the wiring pinout between the AE-100 and AE-1000 lines, so a keypad that “looks the same” can still be the wrong replacement if you match by photo instead of model number. Always read the label on the back of the unit or the inside of the housing, not the front face.

For OEM versus aftermarket, here’s the Malibu reality: Linear OEM keypads are built for coastal exposure, with sealed keypads and UV-stable housings. The cheap aftermarket equivalents sold online are usually indoor-rated and will start ghost-pressing within a season of salt fog. We stock genuine Linear parts plus the one aftermarket line we trust: the HAE series, which is made to the same footprint but with a heavier weather seal. On intercoms, the station itself is usually fine; it’s the transformer or the RJ11 feed that’s failed.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad is dead, but the gate works from the remote. Power or data line failure, usually a corroded terminal on the back of the keypad. Salt creep inside the housing shorts the board over time.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane keypad is delaminating. UV exposure along the Malibu coast breaks down the top layer, and moisture gets between the membranes.
  • Gate opens on its own or won’t stay closed. A failing keypad can send intermittent trigger signals. We see this on older AE-100 series where the relay sticks in the closed position.
  • Intercom buzzes constantly when the gate is idle. The two-wire intercom feed has a short, often from a nicked cable in the conduit near the gate post. Rodents plus salt air equals a bad combination out here.
  • Caller hears you, but you can’t hear them. Speaker failure or a dead microphone capsule inside the intercom station. Linear intercoms from the AE-800 line use a separate speaker and mic; the mic fails first.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Malibu, a Linear keypad replacement runs $265-$420 installed. The range comes down to model: the AE-100 series is the lower end, the AE-2000 with relay output the higher. Intercom station repair lands between $340-$590, which includes the replacement station or speaker/mic assembly, wiring verification, and weather-sealing the connections. If your existing keypad housing is still solid, a board-only swap drops the cost to $180-$240.

Every quote is a fixed price before we touch anything. You’ll know the number when we show up, not after. Parts and labor are line-itemed on the invoice, no mystery line entries. All work carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, Hal comes back. That’s the whole promise, no fine print, no “up to.” And remember $40 off any repair over $200, plus a permanent 10% discount for seniors and veterans.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things without calling anyone: confirm the keypad has power by checking the LED backlight (on models that have one), and verify the wire connections at the keypad’s terminal block aren’t visibly corroded or loose. Beyond that, call us. Linear keypads run on low voltage, so you won’t get hurt, but the damage is usually inside the sealed unit or in the conduit run. If you cut into the wrong wire or cross the wrong terminals, you can fry the control board on your gate operator, and that’s a $500 mistake for a $280 part.

Tell me what it’s doing wrong and I’ll tell you what it actually needs, no runaround. Call (559) 314-7708 and a live person answers, day or night, Malibu time.
