LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Malibu Owner’s Guide

LiftMaster keypad and intercom repair in Malibu typically runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad face, swapping the intercom board, or rewiring the whole entry post. We carry LiftMaster-compatible keypads and intercom parts on the truck, so most Malibu calls are fixed in one visit. The way it usually goes: the keypad stops lighting up, or the intercom sounds like a drive-thru speaker from 1998, or the gate works from the remote but ignores the keypad altogether. You’ve ruled out batteries and cleaned the lens. It’s the part.

We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with LiftMaster. That matters for one reason: we tell you exactly which part failed and what it costs before anything gets ordered. Hal Gatewood has been at this since 2001 along the Malibu coast, and we’ve opened enough LiftMaster enclosures to know which boards salt air kills first and which keypads crack under the Point Dume sun.

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

This repair guide covers the LiftMaster keypads and intercoms found on most residential gate systems installed in Malibu over the last 15 years: the 877MAX and 878MAX wireless keypads, the older 387LM and 377LM wired units, and the LiftMaster telephone entry and intercom modules like the EL25 and EL2000 series. If your gate opener is an LA400, LA500, or SL3000, the keypad wiring and intercom integration follow the same pattern.

Before you order anything, look at the inside of the keypad cover or the back of the intercom board. LiftMaster stamps a model number there, usually starting with a letter and three digits. That number matters more than the opener model. A 387LM won’t talk to a myQ-ready panel without a receiver change, and a 878MAX coded to an older Security+ 2.0 system won’t pair with a gate that’s still running the original Security+ protocol. This is the single most common mismatch we see in Malibu: someone bought an 877MAX online, paired it once, and now the gate only opens half the time because the signal path isn’t clean. We keep both protocol versions in stock and test before we leave.

OEM LiftMaster parts are solid, but for keypads especially, a quality aftermarket equivalent like a Linear or Multi-Code unit with the right frequency often outlasts the plastic housing. The truth is LiftMaster keypad buttons are not made for direct sun and salt spray. A $65 aftermarket keypad with a rubber membrane can outlive a $140 OEM keypad by two years in a west-facing Malibu driveway. We’ll give you the honest choice and stand behind either one.

Signs Your LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but won’t open the gate. The buttons register but the signal isn’t reaching the receiver. Usually a dead transmitter chip, weaker than it looks because the visual feedback still works.
  • You have to press buttons two or three times before anything happens. This is the membrane wearing out, and once it starts, it gets worse fast. Salt air accelerates it, which is why Malibu keypads fail quicker than inland units.
  • Intercom audio cuts out or buzzes constantly. Nine times out of ten it’s a corroded connection at the speaker wire, not the speaker itself. We open the enclosure, clean the terminals, and if the board’s gone, we say so plainly.
  • Gate opens from the remote but not from the intercom. The intercom relay is stuck. It’s a mechanical part, and relays fail open just as often as they fail closed.
  • Keypad works fine in the morning but dead by mid-afternoon. Internal heat expansion on a cracked solder joint. Very common on dark-colored keypad housings facing south in Malibu.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Keypad replacement in Malibu, installed and programmed to your existing receiver:

  • Basic aftermarket keypad: $185 to $240
  • LiftMaster OEM keypad (877MAX or 387LM): $260 to $340
  • Intercom board repair or replacement: $280 to $420
  • Full intercom and keypad swap with new wiring run: $380 to $500 when access is easy, more if the post is rusted or the conduit is crushed

The price is quoted and agreed before any work starts. Not an estimate that drifts. The number Hal gives you is the number on the invoice. Labor includes testing the signal path, programming all remotes and keypads to the same protocol, weather-sealing the enclosure, and walking you through the new code. Every keypad and intercom repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it acts up, one call brings us back.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the batteries, clean the keypad face with a dry cloth, and verify the breaker hasn’t tripped. That’s where the safe part ends. Keypad and intercom wiring runs low voltage, so it won’t shock you, but the gate opener itself carries 120V and the open/close limits are tied to the same board. One crossed wire and the gate can close on a car, a kid, or you, because the safety eyes get bypassed in the confusion. We’ve fixed enough DIY keypad jobs in Malibu to know what goes wrong: stripped screws in the post, siliconed enclosures that trapped moisture, and one memorable case where a homeowner wired the intercom to the gate’s close circuit and activated it mid-repair.

If the keypad is dead and you’re reasonably handy, replacing a wireless keypad with the exact same model is doable. If it’s wired, or the intercom is involved, call us at (559) 314-7708. Tell me what it’s doing wrong and I’ll tell you what it actually needs, no runaround.
